Handling & Disposing Chemical Containers

Jun 20, 2022

Have empty chemical jugs laying around the farm? Aren’t sure how to store leftover chemicals until spring? We’ve got the answers you’ve been looking for!

All chemical jugs, whether empty or full, must be stored in accordance with label recommendations and in a manner that will not endanger humans, animals or the environment. Jugs, even when empty, have residue and vapor that can cause harm if not handled correctly. Therefore, empty jugs should never be used for other purposes and should be disposed of after use.

Here are a few guidelines to follow when disposing empty jugs around the farm:
  • Empty, nonreturnable pesticide containers must be triple-rinsed or its equivalent on the day of their use.
    • Secondary use of such containers that would endanger humans, animals or the environment is prohibited. Pesticide containers must be disposed of in accordance with labeling directions.
  • To avoid wastes, use all material in container before disposing, including rinsate, according to label directions.
    • If wastes cannot be avoided, offer remaining product to a waste disposal facility or pesticide disposal program. Such programs are often run by state or local governments or by industry.
  • All disposals must be in accordance with applicable federal, state and local regulations and procedures.
The South Dakota Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources also offers a waste pesticide, disposal and pesticide container recycling program. Visit their website to learn more about this program or other chemical container disposal procedures: danr.sd.gov/Environment/WasteManagement/WastePesticide.

In addition to disposing empty containers properly, it is also important to store unused chemicals safely too. Improper storage of chemical containers can lead to contamination of the soil, water or other vegetation. Pesticides may build up in bodies of water and destroy zooplankton, which is the primary source of food for juvenile fish, or contaminate groundwater, which can put livestock in harm’s way.

Here are a few tips to remember when storing leftover chemicals on the farm:
  • Always store chemical in its original container
  • Store in a cool, dry place and in such a manner as to prevent cross contamination with other crop protection products, fertilizers, food or feed
  • Always refer to Label and/or Safety Data Sheet
Protecting yourself from chemicals is one of the most important aspects of chemical safety. Each chemical label or Safety Data Sheet includes guidelines on proper personal protective equipment (PPE). For example, Roundup PowerMAX® lists the following safety measures on its label:
  • Chemical resistant gloves
  • Tight-fitting goggles
  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Long pants
  • Socks
Hygiene measures: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling and before eating, drinking, chewing gum, using tobacco, using the toilet or applying cosmetics. Remove PPE immediately after handling this product. Remove soiled clothing immediately and clean thoroughly before using again. Wash thoroughly and put on clean clothing. Keep working clothes separately. Garments that cannot be cleaned must be destroyed.

At Agtegra, we believe there’s nothing more important than safety. If you have a question about proper chemical handling or disposal procedures, contact your nearest Agtegra location.
